Susanne Robicsek, North Carolina Bankruptcy Attorney, has a good recent blog post about the importance of considering all alternatives before looking at bankruptcy as an option to deal with your debt situation.
I agree with her, but would caution folks to look with a critical eye at the options.  Also, it is very important to consider that there are many companies out there promising more than they can deliver in the form of debt settlement and the like.  Study very carefully the alternatives to bankruptcy, then if you think that is the best option, then find the best bankruptcy attorney you can to assist you.  I always tell folks there are two tracks to bankruptcy:  1. Discharging as much debt as possible and 2. Keeping the property that you own and can keep either by exempting it or continuing to pay for it.
